Travel from the Carthage berth into the former coal country of southeast Kansas. At West Mineral, Big Brutus rises above the landscape: an enormous electric shovel now preserved as a monument to mining history. Explore the museum and grounds, examine the machinery from the designated visitor areas, and take in the scale of a machine built to move the earth. The return drive brings you back to Grand Continental for the evening.

Before you go

Planned departure 12:30 pm; return 5:30 pm. The schedule allows for the museum’s earlier winter closing. The main experience takes place at ground level; any interior access or stairs depend on the areas open on the day. No boom climb is included.
